Day 1

Arrival and Addis Ababa City Tour

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, meet your Ethio Origins Tour representative and transfer to your hotel. Explore Addis Ababa's major attractions, including the National Museum, Ethnographic Museum, Trinity Cathedral, Entoto Hills, Shiro Meda traditional market and Merkato, Africa's largest open-air market.

Day 2

Addis Ababa - Bahir Dar

Fly to Bahir Dar and enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Visit ancient island and peninsula monasteries including Ura Kidane Mehret, Azwa Maryam and other beautifully decorated churches hidden within the forests of the Zege Peninsula. End the day with sunset views from Bezawit Hill overlooking the Blue Nile.

Day 3

Bahir Dar - Gondar

Drive through scenic Ethiopian countryside to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia. Visit the Royal Enclosure, Fasil Ghebbi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring magnificent castles built by Ethiopian emperors. Continue to Debre Birhan Selassie Church, renowned for its angel-covered ceiling and impressive religious artwork.

Gondar - Simien Mountains National Park

Drive to the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the Roof of Africa. Enjoy a scenic hike around Sankaber while admiring dramatic escarpments, deep valleys and endemic wildlife including Gelada Baboons.

Simien Mountains - Axum

Travel through breathtaking mountain landscapes to Axum, the ancient capital of the Axumite Kingdom. Learn about the kingdom that once controlled trade routes connecting Africa, Arabia and the Mediterranean world.

Day 6

Axum City Tour

Explore the archaeological wonders of Axum, including the Ancient Stelae Fields, Archaeological Museum, Queen of Sheba's Palace ruins, tombs of ancient kings and St. Mary of Zion Church. According to Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, the Ark of the Covenant is housed here.

Day 7

Axum - Hawzen

Drive through the historic landscapes of Tigray. Visit Adwa Battlefield, Yeha Temple, Ethiopia's oldest standing structure, Aba Gerima Monastery, and the Petros and Paulos rock churches before continuing to Hawzen.

Day 8

Hawzen - Mekele

Explore some of Tigray's most remarkable rock-hewn churches, including Abraha Atsbeha, Wukro Chirkos and Medhane Alem Kesho. Continue to Mekele.

Mekele - Erta Ale Volcano

Begin your expedition into the Danakil Depression. Drive across lava fields and desert landscapes before trekking to Erta Ale Volcano, home to one of the world's few permanent lava lakes. Witness the spectacular glow of molten lava beneath the night sky.

Day 10

Erta Ale - Lake Asale - Hamed Ela

Enjoy sunrise views over the volcano before descending. Continue to Lake Asale and the surrounding salt flats, where Afar communities harvest salt using centuries-old methods. Observe camel caravans crossing the desert.

Day 11

Dallol - Mekele

Visit the surreal geothermal landscapes of Dallol, one of the hottest places on Earth. Explore colorful sulfur formations, acidic pools, salt canyons and mineral terraces before returning to Mekele.

Day 12

Mekele - Lalibela

Drive through spectacular highland scenery toward Lalibela. Arrive in Ethiopia's most famous pilgrimage town and enjoy panoramic sunset views.

Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Spend the day exploring Lalibela's UNESCO-listed rock-hewn churches, carved directly from volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries. Visit Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Golgotha, Bet Meskel, Bet Danagel and other northern churches, then participate in a traditional coffee ceremony.

Lalibela Excursion

Choose between hiking to Asheton Maryam Monastery or visiting Yemrehanna Kristos Cave Church. Continue exploring Lalibela's southern church complex, including the iconic Bet Giyorgis.

Lalibela - Dire Dawa - Harar

Fly to Dire Dawa via Addis Ababa and drive to Harar. Visit coffee plantations and the famous chat-growing region en route.

Harar City Tour and Hyena Feeding Ceremony

Explore Harar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Islam's holiest cities. Visit Harari Old Town, Arthur Rimbaud House, Harari Museum, Ras Mekonnen House and traditional Harari homes. In the evening, witness the famous Hyena Feeding Ceremony.

Harar - Awash National Park

Lake Langano - Arba Minch

Lake Chamo and Dorze Village

Take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to observe giant Nile crocodiles, hippos and abundant birdlife. Visit the Dorze people, famous for their towering beehive-shaped bamboo houses and weaving traditions.

Arba Minch - Jinka

Drive to Bale Mountains National Park, one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots. Search for endemic wildlife including Mountain Nyala, Menelik's Bushbuck, Bale Monkeys and Ethiopian Wolves when seasonal conditions allow. Enjoy spectacular mountain scenery and birdlife.

Bale Mountains - Addis Ababa and Departure
